BIRDING
BY IMPRESSION
(One to two
hours indoors; instructional outdoor session available)
This
exciting new concept to field identification is changing the way that many
people are enjoying and identifying birds in the field. Using impression-based
physical characters rather than scientific plumage analysis as the initial
approach to field identification, a simple, yet surprising accurate picture is
quickly obtained. The beauty and effectiveness of this approach lies in its
simplicity and doesn’t require knowledge of complicated feather anatomy or
prior experience with birds. Beginners and experts alike will share the
benefits, with common sense and a keen sense of observation the most important
tools needed.
This
interactive program will start by examining Kevin’s personal birding journey
of 27 years, with his recent ‘conversion’ to this different approach,
followed by photographs and explanations that depict the basic concepts of
impression-based birding. Audience members will be encouraged to share their
thoughts and impressions of comparative photos, with questions and comments
encouraged.
Outdoor workshop
may occur before or after indoor session. Length should be a minimum of
two hours, not including travel time to a birding site.
SHOREBIRDS
BY IMPRESSION
(One
to two hours indoors, instructional outdoor session available)
This short indoor workshop
has been formatted to help remove present confusion that exists with field
identification of shorebirds. Formerly considered a difficult task reserved for
experts, shorebird ID will become easier for all levels of birders if a
relatively simple approach is taken. Starting with basic principles and
non-changeable field characters such as size, structure and behavior, a simple
accurate first impression is formed. By first concentrating on the “basics”
and overall comparative views of each shorebird, the groundwork is set in place
for applying plumage characters and other detailed ID features.
The beauty of this approach
rests with its simplicity. It doesn’t require knowledge of complicated feather
anatomy or prior experience with shorebirds. The only mental tools needed are
common sense and a keen eye for details. Binoculars and telescopes are helpful
when viewing birds at a distance, but many shorebirds may be identified by size,
shape and structure without any optics. Beginners and experts alike will benefit
from this simpler approach to bird identification, which will become second
nature and part of your unconscious thought process after a period of time.
Outdoor workshop
may occur before or after indoor session. Length should be a minimum of
two hours, not including travel time to a birding site.
SHOOTING
FOR THE EDGE: HELPFUL TIPS FOR GETTING GREAT WILDLIFE PHOTOS IN THE
FIELD
(One
to two
hours indoor session)
In
this short indoor workshop, Kevin will share many trade secrets that he has
learned over the last 30 years that will help photographers get the best
possible wildlife photographs in a variety of field conditions. From working in
stationary and portable blinds to learning how to minimize your presence in the
field, many useful tips will be discussed and shown in a digital show.
Fundamental photography basics of field approach techniques and etiquette will
be covered, as well as more advanced tips on how to attract birds to outdoor
feeding or water stations. A question and answer period will end the workshop.
